'MAKE AMERICA GAY AGAIN': NEW COLLECTION CELEBRATES AMERICAN GAY PRIDE

American Apparel’s new clothing range celebrates gay pride month and mocks Donald Trump.

The clothes feature bright colours and slogans reminiscent of the Republican candidate’s ‘Make America Great Again’ campaign, but without the racist undertones.

An iconic sloganed red cap even features in the fabulous collection that ranges between $24 and $30.

The clothes have been described as “a collection of styles that stand for acceptance – no matter who you are, where you’re from or who you love.”

30% of the proceeds from the garments will be donated to the Human Rights Campaign, who collaborated with American Apparel in creating the clothes.

The money raised will be used to fund their ongoing work to establish an amendment to the Civil Rights Act, which would ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in the USA.

Olivia Alair Dalton, President of Marketing at American Apparel, said: “Today, LGBTQ people remain at risk of being fired, evicted or denied services in a majority of states simply because of who they are. That’s why we are fighting to pass the Equality Act.”

Alongside the clothes, the campaign released personal video stories which aim to educate and spread acceptance and understanding of the LGBT community to customers.

American Apparel has consistently supported LGBT movements and is the brand behind the ‘Gay O.K’ and ‘legalise gay’ collections.

The company frequently runs ads featuring same sex couples and boasts its involvement with pride parades across the globe.

American apparel joins Converse and Adidas in Pride branded clothes. Converse released limited edition trainers designed to be worn at pride events around the world. The design boasted rainbow soles, patterns and license plates. Adidas also re-released its ‘Superstar’ trainers with rainbow paint splashes covering the classic design.

Last year the company announced bankruptcy but emerged from that in February after selling off shares to private companies.

The iconic Pepperidge Farm brand unveiled a revamped logo, featuring multicolored fish in a nod to the rainbow flag, in a June 2 Adweek article. The new logo, which will appear on select Goldfish Colors variety packages in stores across the country, includes the tagline: “Smiles For All Families.”

Goldfish’s support for the LGBT community extends beyond packaging. The brand will also sponsor Pride parades in five U.S. cities — New York, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Minneapolis/St. Paul and Norwalk, Connecticut — along with movie nights and other activities in each location. Meanwhile, officials are also launching a social media effort, asking consumers to share images of their families on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #ForAllFamilies. 

In an email, Pepperidge Farm Chief Marketing Officer Chris Foley told The Huffington Post that the move was more than just a business decision. He also hopes the message of Goldfish’s new effort resounds beyond the last Sunday in June. 

“For nearly 20 years, Goldfish has been ‘the snack that smiles back,’ and in 2016 and moving forward, we want to underscore that Goldfish brings smiles to all families,” he said.

Foley also noted that the effort was “at the heart of who we are,” and, in fact, Pepperidge Farm and its parent company, Campbell’s Soup, have been outspoken supporters of the LGBT community for some time. Last year, Campbell’s put the spotlight on two gay dads and their 3-year-old son, along with many other families, in their “Made for Real, Real Life” ad campaign.
